Religious Education

At Bannerman Road, we believe that RE can provoke challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.

We want RE to develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and other worldviews that offer answers to these challenging questions. We want to contribute to the development of pupils’ own spiritual and philosophical convictions, exploring and enriching their own beliefs and values - we aim for children to be inspired by the familiar and curious about the unknown.

Bannerman Road is situated within a community of diverse cultures and beliefs. We want RE to encourage pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging so that they flourish individually within their communities but also as respectful citizens in a diverse society and global community – be engaged and proud of their local environment and also think on a global scale. Our aim is that RE enables pupils to develop respect for and sensitivity to others, in particular those whose faiths and beliefs are different from their own. It promotes discernment and enables pupils to combat prejudice as any misunderstandings can be explored. RE has an important role in preparing pupils for adult life, employment and lifelong learning.

The Awareness, Mystery & Value scheme we use to support our RE curriculum aims for children to learn about and from religions & worldviews. The intention is that children recognise and have validated their own spirituality and culture, where relevant, within elements of other religions and worldviews. As they learn about viewpoints and practices outside of their experiences, they will learn to recognise similarities and differences between those and their own: be themselves, embrace difference and stand up for everyone’s rights.

We believe that the values underpinning our education – Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Curiosity and Collaboration - will enable the children to become confident, reflective, spiritual and morally aware people who can play a role in shaping modern Britain.
